Text Encryptor & Hash Generator

About the Text Encryptor & Hasher

Two text-security tools in one: AES-256 encryption that locks a message with your passphrase so only someone who knows it can read it, and a hash generator that computes SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests. Everything runs locally in your browser — your text and passphrase never leave the page.

This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. To encrypt, type your message and a secret passphrase, then press Encrypt and share the resulting string.
  2. To decrypt, paste the encrypted string, enter the same passphrase, and press Decrypt.
  3. Switch to the Hash tab to generate SHA-1/256/512 digests of any text.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the encryption?

Text is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, the same standard used by banks and messaging apps. Your passphrase is turned into a key with PBKDF2 (250,000 rounds of SHA-256) and a random salt, so the same message encrypts differently every time and tampering is detected. The weakest link is the passphrase itself — use several random words. Text encrypted by the older version of this tool can still be decrypted.

What is a hash and can it be reversed?

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your input. SHA-1/256/512 are one-way: you cannot recover the original text from the digest. Hashes are used to verify integrity, not to hide recoverable data.

Which hash should I use?

Prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512 for integrity checks. SHA-1 is included for compatibility with older systems but is considered weak for security purposes.

Is my input private?

Yes. Encryption and hashing both run in your browser using the built-in Web Crypto API; your text and passphrase are never uploaded.
