Hash Generator
About the Hash Generator
Turn any text into a SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 hash. This is handy for checking that two pieces of text match, comparing a checksum, or learning how hashing works. The hash is calculated in your browser as you type.
This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text to hash.
- Choose the algorithm (SHA-256 is a common default).
- Copy the resulting hex digest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hash and what is it used for?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of input data. The same input always yields the same hash, and a tiny change produces a completely different one — which makes hashes ideal for checksums and integrity checks.
Can a hash be reversed back to the original text?
No. Cryptographic hashes are one-way: you cannot recover the input from the digest. That is why hashes are used to verify data rather than to store recoverable information.
Should I use these hashes to store passwords?
Not directly. Plain SHA hashes are too fast for password storage — use a purpose-built, salted, slow algorithm like bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2. SHA-256/512 are appropriate for checksums and integrity, not raw password hashing.
Is SHA-1 still safe to use?
SHA-1 is broken for collision resistance and should not be used for security. It is included here only for legacy checksums; prefer SHA-256 or stronger for anything that matters.
