Unzip Files
About the Unzip Tool
Open any ZIP file in your browser, browse its folders, search for a file, preview images, text and PDFs, and extract everything or just the files you pick. Password-protected ZIPs are supported, including AES-256 and the older ZipCrypto encryption. Privacy note: files never leave your device. The archive is read and decompressed locally in a background worker — nothing is uploaded, so it works the same for confidential documents.
This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop a .zip file onto the page, or tap “Choose ZIP file”.
- If it’s password-protected, enter the password when asked.
- Browse or search the file tree; tap a file to preview it.
- Tick the files you want (all are selected by default).
- Choose “Extract to folder” (Chrome/Edge on desktop), “Download as ZIP”, or download the files individually.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The ZIP is opened and extracted entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Can it open password-protected ZIP files?
Yes — both AES-encrypted (128/192/256-bit) and legacy ZipCrypto ZIPs. If the password is wrong you’ll see a clear “wrong password” message and can try again.
Where do extracted files go?
In Chrome and Edge on desktop you can pick a folder and the files are written straight into it, keeping the folder structure. Other browsers download the files individually or as a new ZIP; on phones you can also use the Share button where supported.
Is it safe to open ZIPs from strangers?
The tool reads the archive’s headers first and warns you before extracting if it would expand beyond 2 GB or if any large file is compressed more than 100:1 — the signature of a “zip bomb”. File paths are also cleaned so an entry like “../../file” can’t escape the folder you choose, and HTML, SVG and script files are only ever shown as plain text, never run.
How big a ZIP can it handle?
Data is streamed in chunks, so multi-gigabyte ZIPs generally work in desktop Chrome and Edge when you extract to a folder. Downloads and “Download as ZIP” build the result in memory, so very large selections depend on your device’s RAM.
What about RAR or 7z files?
Use the Extract RAR or Extract 7z tools — they load a separate engine only when you need it.
