Extract 7z & TAR Files

About the 7z & TAR Extractor

Open 7-Zip (.7z) archives, TAR files and compressed tarballs (.tar.gz/.tgz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz) right in your browser. Single .gz files are decompressed too. Preview files before extracting and pick exactly what you need. Privacy note: files never leave your device. Archives are decoded locally by a WebAssembly build of libarchive running in a background worker; nothing is uploaded.

This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop a .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz or .gz file onto the page.
  2. The file list appears once the archive engine has read it.
  3. Search, browse and preview files.
  4. Extract all or selected files to a folder, download them, or repack them as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Decompression happens entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device.

Which 7z compression methods are supported?

Common 7z methods such as LZMA, LZMA2, BZip2 and Deflate are supported. Password-protected (encrypted) 7z archives are not supported by the underlying engine yet.

Can it open .gz, .bz2 and .xz files?

Tarballs (.tar.gz/.tgz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz) are fully supported, and a single .gz file is decompressed with the browser’s built-in GZip support. A single .bz2 or .xz file (not a tar) isn’t supported.

Is there a size limit?

The archive is loaded into memory to decompress it, so the limit depends on your device — a few hundred megabytes is comfortable on most computers.

Is it safe to open archives from the internet?

The tool warns before extracting anything that would expand beyond 2 GB or far more than its packed size, cleans file paths so nothing can escape the folder you choose, and shows HTML/SVG/script files only as plain text.
