Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service. Norms vary widely by country — in many places a small round-up or 5–10% is normal, and in some tipping is not expected at all.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total for convenience. This tool applies the tip to whatever bill figure you enter.

How is the bill split?

The tip is added to the bill and the total is divided equally by the number of people. For uneven splits, calculate each share separately from the totals shown.
