Text to Speech
About the Text-to-Speech Tool
Convert written text into spoken audio using the voices built into your device and browser. It is useful for proofreading by ear, accessibility, or listening to an article hands-free. Speech is generated locally by your browser’s speech engine, so your text is not sent to a cloud service.
This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text you want spoken.
- Choose a voice and adjust speed and pitch.
- Press play to listen.
Frequently asked questions
Which voices are available?
The tool uses the Web Speech API, so the available voices come from your operating system and browser. The exact list — and their languages and accents — varies between Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and each browser.
Is my text sent to a server?
The synthesis is handled by your browser’s built-in speech engine. On most modern setups this runs on-device; some browsers may use an OS-level service, but the app itself does not upload your text to any third-party server.
Why does no sound play or the voice list look empty?
Voices load asynchronously and some browsers need a user interaction first, so press play once and try again if the list is empty. Also check the tab is not muted and your system volume is up.
Can I download the spoken audio as a file?
The Web Speech API plays audio but does not directly export a file. To save it, you would record the output; the tool’s core purpose is live playback for listening and proofreading.
