About the GST / VAT / Sales Tax Calculator
Add tax to a net amount, or strip tax out of a tax-inclusive (gross) amount, at any rate. It works for GST, VAT, and sales tax alike — the maths is the same, only the name and rate differ by country.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add GST/VAT to a price?
Multiply the net amount by the rate: tax = net × (rate ÷ 100); gross = net + tax. At 17%, a net of 1000 becomes 1000 + 170 = 1170.
How do I remove tax from a tax-inclusive price?
Divide the gross by (1 + rate). At 17%, a gross of 1170 gives a net of 1170 ÷ 1.17 = 1000, so the tax was 170. Subtracting 17% of the gross would be wrong.
Is GST the same as VAT and sales tax?
They are all consumption taxes on a percentage of price and are calculated identically here. GST and VAT are typically collected at each stage of supply, while US sales tax is charged once at the final sale, but the add/remove maths is the same.
