Online Compass

About the Compass & Level

A digital compass and dual-axis bubble level that read your device’s orientation sensors to show your heading in degrees plus pitch and roll. The Physics & Sensors suite also includes a location sharer and a tally counter. It works best on a phone or tablet with motion sensors, and it processes everything on-device.

This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Open the tool on a mobile device and grant motion-sensor permission when prompted (required on iOS).
  2. Hold the device flat to read the compass heading and cardinal direction.
  3. Use the bubble-level panels to check pitch and roll; both near zero means level.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it ask for sensor permission?

Reading heading and tilt requires access to the device orientation sensors. On iOS, browsers require you to explicitly grant this permission before any values appear.

It shows nothing on my laptop — why?

Most desktops and laptops have no compass or motion sensors, so there is no orientation data to display. Use a phone or tablet for the compass and level.

How accurate is the compass?

Accuracy depends on your device’s magnetometer and can be affected by nearby metal or magnets. For best results, hold the device flat and away from interference; calibrate via your device if the heading drifts.
