Ideal Weight Calculator

About the Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimate a healthy target body weight from your height and sex using two established clinical formulas — Devine and Robinson — shown side by side so you can compare them. Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas give a single reference figure; they are a starting point, not a strict goal. Body composition, frame size, and fitness all matter, so use the range as guidance rather than a rule.

Frequently asked questions

How are the Devine and Robinson figures calculated?

Both build on a base weight for the first 5 feet (152.4 cm) of height, then add a fixed amount per inch above that. Devine adds 2.3 kg/inch (base 50 kg men, 45.5 kg women); Robinson adds 1.9 kg/inch for men (base 52 kg) and 1.7 kg/inch for women (base 49 kg).

Which formula should I use?

Devine is the most widely used, especially for medication dosing, so it is shown as the standard target. Robinson tends to give slightly different values; seeing both gives you a sensible range rather than a single point.

Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. IBW formulas were originally designed for clinical dosing, not to define the one correct weight for a person. A healthy weight is better thought of as a range — cross-check with BMI and, ideally, professional advice.

What if I am shorter than 5 feet?

Below 152.4 cm the formulas fall back to their base weights (50/52 kg for men, 45.5/49 kg for women), since the per-inch component only applies above 5 feet. For very short statures, treat the number cautiously and consult a professional.
