Brick Calculator

About the Brick Calculator

Estimate how many bricks you need for a wall from its length, height, and the brick size you are using, with an allowance for mortar joints and wastage. Built for homeowners planning a boundary wall as well as contractors preparing a quote.

This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Enter the wall length and height to get the wall area.
  2. Select or enter your brick dimensions (standard sizes are pre-filled).
  3. Add a wastage allowance — 5–10% covers breakage and cuts on most jobs.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks are needed per square metre?

With a standard metric brick (215 × 102.5 × 65 mm) and 10 mm mortar joints, a single-skin (half-brick) wall needs about 60 bricks/m². A double-skin (one-brick) wall needs about 120/m². South Asian standard bricks (9" × 4.5" × 3") come out near 50 bricks/m² for a 4.5-inch wall.

How much extra should I order for wastage?

Add 5% for simple straight walls and 10% or more for walls with many openings, corners, or cut bricks. Ordering everything in one batch also keeps the colour consistent between firing lots.

How much mortar do I need?

Roughly 0.02–0.03 m³ of mortar per m² of single-skin wall — about one 50 kg bag of cement per 100–120 bricks at a 1:5 cement-to-sand mix. Openings (doors and windows) should be subtracted from the wall area first.
